Biology 1.5 Demonstrate understanding of biological ideas relating to a mammal as a consumer
Achievement criteria
The level of achievement that you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question.
The key words are demonstrate understanding, in-depth understanding, comprehensive understanding of biological ideas relating to a mammal as a consumer. From your answers the assessor will assess your understanding of the topics of the achievement standard.

Achievement
Demonstrate understanding of biological ideas relating to a mammal as a consumer.
This involves defining, using annotated diagrams, and giving characteristics of, or an account of, a mammal as a consumer.
Make sure you can describe:
- the overall function of
- processing food
- circulation
- respiration
- how the parts of the digestive system function
- buccal cavity (mouth – including structure of a generalised tooth)
- salivary glands
- oesophagus
- stomach
- duodenum
- bile duct
- liver
- gall bladder
- pancreas
- pancreatic duct
- ileum
- caecum
- appendix
- colon
- rectum
- anus
- how food is ingested
- how food is processed by physical digestion
- how food is processed by chemical digestion
- absorption of processed food
- assimilation of processed food
- egestion of processed food wastes
- how and where peristalsis occurs
- transport of the products of digestion within the body by the circulation system
- how the parts of the circulation system function
- heart (names of structures within the organ are not required)
- veins
- arteries
- capillaries
- use of food in cells in aerobic respiration (raw materials and products)
- function of lungs (names of structures within the organ are not required)
relate processing of food, circulation and respiration to each other and to the overall survival of the mammal.
Achievement with merit
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of biological ideas relating to a mammal as a consumer.
This involves explaining biological ideas relating to the life processes used by mammals as consumers.
Make sure you can explain:
- the overall function of the three life processes (processing food, circulation, respiration)
- how the three life processes help the overall survival of the mammal
- the functioning of the parts of the digestive system during:
- ingestion
- peristalsis
- physical digestion – chewing, churning, emulsification
- chemical digestion – enzymes, acid
- absorption – villi, lacteals, capillaries
- assimilation
- egestion of wastes
- how the products of digestion are transported within the body by the circulation system
- the functioning of the parts of the circulation system
- heart (names of structures within the organ are not required)
- veins, arteries, capillaries
- lymphatic system
- hepatic portal system
- use of food in cells in aerobic respiration (raw materials and products)
- the functioning of lungs (names of structures within the organ are not required).
Achievement with excellence
Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of biological ideas relating to a mammal as a consumer.
This involves linking biological ideas relating to a mammal as a consumer. It may involve elaborating, applying, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing.
Make sure you can:
- describe and explain the ideas listed above for achieved and merit
- use linking words and phrases, such as ‘because’, ‘this means that’, ‘whereas. ‘however;’ when comparing and contrasting, discussing, elaborating etc.
- show you understand how the parts and processes work together so the mammal can survive.
- use biological terms correctly eg ingestion, peristalsis, physical digestion, emulsification, chemical digestion, enzymes, absorption, villi, lacteals, assimilation, egestion of wastes.
