Biology 1.5 Demonstrate understanding of biological ideas relating to a mammal as a consumer
Key tips
- Make sure your course notes are up to date. If not, see your teacher and use the forum threads and the rest of the Studyit 'find what you need to know' pages for this standard.
- There is a very specific biology vocabulary for the parts of the human body so it is important to use the correct biological terms in your answers. For example, in digestion, cells SECRETE enzymes – they do NOT excrete them! Faeces are egested from the anus NOT excreted.
- Labelled diagrams are a good way to learn the processes involved in ingestion, digestion, absorption and egestion. They are also a very good way to quickly and clearly answer exam questions – use labelled diagram wherever you can.
- The following terms are often used in questions:
The terms tell you the way you should write your answer. From your answers, the assessor will assess judge your understanding of the biological ideas.
- Use statements like 'because', ‘so that’, ‘therefore’ ‘this means that’, to show your understanding. For example, 'Physical digestion makes food particles smaller so that there is more surface area where enzymes can break down food molecules.' ‘The pH in the buccal cavity is about 7 because the enzyme amylase works best in neutral pH.’
