Biology 2.2 Research the interaction between humans and an aspect of biology

Subject content

  • In research, you collect data from secondary sources. Some use of primary sources, for example, through interviews, is acceptable. It is expected that you will carry out your own research and reference your material.
  • Interaction between humans and an aspect of biology could be selected from either:
    • the impact of a human activity on an ecosystem. The impact of human activities is in relation to the biology of the ecosystem and/or the organisms;
    • OR
    • the use of an applied biology technique. The use of an applied biology technique is in relation to the human need or demand and the biological concepts and processes used in the technique.
  • Understand the research process:
    • refine your topic into a specific question or questions to be investigated
    • plan the research – this may change as you progress
    • collect a range of information and decide what is relevant to your question
    • process information to describe biological concepts and processes associated with the technique or ecosystem
    • for use of an applied biology technique, you need to recognise the human need or demand for the technique and the implications of using this technique on people, animals, or plants
    • for impact of human activity on an ecosystem technique, you need to discuss the impact of humans, the current and future management options for the ecosystem, and the implications of these options
    • produce a report in your own words in the format required
    • reference resources used in the body of the report using footnotes or endnotes – these references must also appear in the reference list/bibliography
    • your report must include a list of references (that is, the sources of information) written in such a way that another person can find them.
  • For example, if you choose IVF (in vitro fertilisation) – a medical technology – the biological concepts and processes may include knowledge of the reproductive cycle, where the cycle might fail, how IVF bypasses the cycle, the influence of hormones, procedures used to develop the technique, and how the technique is carried out. Then, to analyse the technique, you may include the effects and implications of using this technique and balance this with the human need and demand.
  • The results of your research could be presented as a written report, newspaper article, seminar, poster, website, or multimedia presentation. Your teacher will guide you.
