Biology 2.6 Describe diversity in the structure and function of animals
Achievement criteria
The level of achievement that you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question. The key words are describe, explain, and discuss aspects of diversity of animals.
Achievement
Describe diversity in the structure and function of animals in relation to a biological process.
Make sure you can:
- select three animal groups that show clear diversity in their structure and function
- clearly and accurately describe diversity in the structure and relevant functions of three taxonomic or functional animal groups in relation to a biological process
- draw clear, well labelled, and annotated diagrams of relevant structures and relate these structures to their functions.
Achievement with Merit
Explain diversity in the structure and function of animals in relation to a biological process.
Make sure you can meet the criteria for Achievement as outlined above and:
- incorporate several aspects of the biological process into their discussion, eg gut length, water reabsorption, and mouthparts
- explain the reasons for the diversity, clearly relating them to the specific question asked, rather than a rewrite of an answer prepared for earlier examinations
- write in a logical and coherent fashion, communicating ideas clearly and succinctly using relevant biological language.
Achievement with Excellence
Discuss diversity in the structure and function of animals in relation to a biological process.
Make sure you can meet the criteria for Achievement and Merit as outlined and:
- take note of the key words in the question and relate these to your discussion of diversity
- select animal groups demonstrating relevant attributes and limitations for the question asked and clearly describe, explain, and discuss their diversity
- discuss the reasons for diversity and clearly relate them to the actual question being asked, not a rewrite of a prepared answer
- write with minimal irrelevant or inaccurate biological information.
