Biology 2.7 Describe diversity in the structure and function of plants

Achievement criteria

This achievement standard focuses on the diversity in structure and function over three taxonomic or functional groups of multi-cellular plants.

The level of achievement that you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question. The key words are describe, explain, and discuss aspects of the diversity in plants.

Achievement

Describe diversity in the structure and function of plants in relation to a biological process.

Make sure you can:

  • clearly describe structure and function related to your chosen biological process
  • describe how this plant process is carried out over three plant groups, using correct terminology
  • draw clear, accurate, and annotated diagrams of relevant structures
  • select three plant groups in which you can show diversity of structure and function for the chosen plant process.

Achievement with Merit

Explain diversity in the structure and function of plants in relation to a biological process.

Make sure you can:

  • meet the criteria for Achievement outlined above
  • explain the significance of why the plant groups have particular structures or carry out the process in a particular way
  • demonstrate a good understanding of the overall purpose of the chosen plant process
  • write in a logical and coherent fashion, communicating ideas clearly and succinctly using relevant biological language.

Achievement with Excellence

Discuss diversity in the structure and function of plants in relation to a biological process.

Make sure you can meet the criteria for Achievement and Merit as outlined and:

  • take note of the key words in the question and relate these to your discussion of diversity
  • select plant groups demonstrating relevant attributes and limitations for the question asked and clearly describe, explain, and discuss their diversity, including evolutionary significance, genetic variation, selection pressures, adaptations, and competition pressures with respect to long-term survival
  • discuss the reasons for diversity and clearly relate them to the actual question being asked, not a rewrite of a prepared answer
  • write with minimal irrelevant or inaccurate biological information.
