Biology 2.8 Describe cell structure and function
Subject content
Make sure you have up-to-date course notes. Use them, and if you haven't got them, see your teacher.
Cells will include:
- plant cells
- animal cells
- unicellular organisms.
Check out Cells alive! as an introduction to each of the types of cells and their organelles.
Cell structure and function will include:
- cellular components and organelles – cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nuclear membrane, nucleus, chromosomes, mitochondria, chloroplast, centriole, cilia, flagellum, vacuole, contractile vacuole, ribosome, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome, golgi body, eye spot
- cell processes:
- movement of materials – diffusion, osmosis, active transport, secretion. See the ‘Osmosis’ PowerPoint in Introductory Biology.
- cell respiration and photosynthesis as they relate to the overall functioning of the cell (you do not need to give detail of the stages of processes)
- enzyme activity and DNA replication
- factors that affect cell structures and processes
- reasons for similarities and differences such as cell size, cell shape, relative numbers of organelles present, size of organelle (for example, vacuole, cell membrane), internal structure.
