Biology 3.4 Describe animal behaviour and plant responses in relation to environmental factors

Sites for revision

Check the Biology 2.3 links page also as it has many useful links to help revision.

Nature Works: Chemical communication
This site shows how many animals use chemical communication or pheromones to communicate. It explains how animals may leave their scent to mark territory or attract mates, and how they often use smell to find prey and identify other animals.

Auxins
This website describes the functions of auxins (and other plant hormones) and experiments involving auxins. It is suitable for NCEA level 3.

Meristems and mitotic cell divisions
This website contains information about apical meristems. It is worth following the instructions to get a close look at the cellular structure and function so make sure you follow the instructions to ‘roll over’ the diagrams.

Circadian rhythms
This website presents background information on biorhythms, and describes the research conducted in the laboratory. Some of the material goes beyond NCEA requirements, but it is suitable for level 3.

Development flowering to senescence
This website provides information on short night / long night plants. It is suitable for NCEA level 3. Check out the quiz at the bottom of the web page.

Geotropism or gravitropism
This website provides information regarding positive and negative geotropism. Suitable for NCEA level 3.
