Biology 3.6 Describe applications of biotechnological techniques

Achievement criteria

The level of achievement that you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question. The key words are describe, explain, and discuss applications of biotechnological techniques to meet human needs and demands.

You need to show competency in TWO applications, but only ONE needs discussion to reach Excellence level. Although all are listed in the achievement criteria, your teacher will advise you on the ones that you will be learning in class.

Achievement

  • You are able to describe applications of biotechnological techniques to meet human needs and demands. This involves identifying key words to apply in the context, writing precise and complete descriptions in an ordered manner, and giving features of and/or outlining.

Make sure you can:

  • describe the techniques of: PCR, ligation, use of restriction enzymes, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, DNA chips, and tissue culture
  • describe the techniques studied in TWO of the relevant application such as: gene cloning, transgenesis, DNA profiling, genome analysis, stem cell research, and xenotransplantation.

Achievement with Merit

  • You are able to explain applications of biotechnological techniques to meet human needs and demands. This involves describing as well as clarifying, giving reasons for, and giving an account of and/or making links.

Make sure you can:

  • meet the criteria for Achievement
  • explain how TWO of: gene cloning, transgenesis, DNA profiling, genome analysis, stem cell research, xenotransplanation, and tissue culture, meet human needs and demands.

Achievement with Excellence

  • You are able to discuss applications of biotechnological techniques to meet human needs and demands.
  • You must be able to show understanding by linking biological ideas. It may involve justifying, relating, evaluating, reviewing, interpreting, comparing and contrasting, and analysing.

Make sure you can:

  • meet criteria for Achievement and Merit
  • link differing viewpoints of the application and the need – these links may be social, economical, ethical, or environmental
  • understand the processes involved in the application
  • understand the impact of the applications in society.
