Chemistry 1.1 Carry out a practical chemistry investigation with direction

Achievement criteria

The level of achievement that you will reach is decided by the way you carry out a practical science investigation. Your investigation will involve planning, collecting, and processing the data, and interpreting your results.

On this page: Achievement | Achievement with Merit | Achievement with Excellence

Achievement

Carry out practical chemistry investigation, with direction.

A practical chemistry investigation will involve:

  • developing a method to collect data
  • identification of a range for the independent variable or sample
  • measurement of the dependent variable or the collection of data with units
  • collecting, recording, and processing data relevant to the purpose
  • a conclusion based on the processed data.

Achievement with merit

Carry out an in-depth practical chemistry investigation.

An in-depth investigation will include:

  • All criteria for achievement
  • a valid range for the independent variable or sample
  • sufficient repetition to show reliability of the data
  • ways of controlling other variables that may have a significant effect on results
  • the collection of data with consideration of factors such as sampling, bias, and/or sources of error
  • techniques that increase the accuracy of the measured values of the dependent (and independent variable)
  • collecting, recording and processing data to enable a trend or pattern (or absence) to be determined
  • a valid conclusion based on interpretation of the processed data that links to the purpose of the investigation.

Achievement with excellence

Carry out a comprehensive practical chemistry investigation.

A comprehensive investigation will include:

  • all criteria for merit
  • justification of the choices made to increase the accuracy during the investigation
  • justification of the conclusion in terms of the processed data and the purpose of the investigation
  • links between the investigation findings and applicable chemistry ideas.
