Chemistry 1.3 Demonstrate understanding of aspects of carbon chemistry
Key tips
- Know how to write an equation in words and/or formulae.
- Learn how to balance an equation.
- Practise drawing structural formulae of organic compounds, always making sure that each carbon atom has four bonds.
- Create a summary sheet of all the organic molecules that you may have to draw and name.
- Write and learn the balanced chemical equations for the combustion of alkanes and alcohols, fermentation and the production of methanol from natural gas.
- Use mind maps to help identify the links between the use of carbon compounds as fuels and the impact on human health and the environment.
Make sure you can link the chemical and physical properties of carbon compounds to their method of production or use (eg; how boiling points of alkanes are utilised in the process of fractional distillation).
