Chemistry 1.4 Demonstrate understanding of aspects of selected elements
Achievement criteria
The type of achievement you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question. From your answers the assessor will assess your understanding of the topics of the achievement standard.
On this page: Achievement | Achievement with Merit | Achievement with Excellence
Achievement
Demonstrate understanding of aspects of selected elements.
This involves describing, identifying, naming, drawing, giving an account of or defining aspects of elements
Make sure you can:
- Use mass numbers and atomic numbers to work out the numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom.
- Write the electron arrangement for the first twenty elements.
- Describe the trend in reactivity as you go down a group.
- Describe the trend in type of element (metal or non-metal) as you go across a period.
- Describe the physical properties and uses of metals (limited to Na, Li, Mg, Ca, Al, Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb, Ag)
- Physical properties could include melting and boiling points, colour, luster, hardness, ductility and malleability, electrical and heat conductivity and density .
- Describe the relative reactivity of different metals with oxygen, water and acids (HCl and H2SO4 only).
- Describe the composition and properties of alloys.
- Describe the physical and chemical properties and uses of selected non-metals (sulfur, aqueous chlorine, allotropes of carbon and oxygen(ozone), nitrogen and bromine)
- Describe the physical and chemical properties of selected non-metal compounds including sulfuric acid and ammonia.
- Give names and chemical formulae for selected substances.
- Complete word equations for chemical reactions.
Achievement with merit
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of aspects of selected elements.
This involves explaining aspects of elements.
Make sure you can:
- Meet the requirements for Achievement.
- Explain trends in across a row and down a period in relation to electron arrangements.
- Explain the uses of metals and non-metals in terms of their physical and chemical properties.
- Write word equations for chemical reactions.
- Complete symbol equations for chemical reactions.
Achievement with excellence
Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of aspects of selected elements.
This involves linking aspects of elements when explaining, elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing.
Make sure you can:
- Meet the requirements for Merit.
- Analyse and make multiple links between the physical and chemical properties of different elements and their uses.
- Write balanced symbol equations for chemical reactions.
