Chemistry 1.5 Demonstrate understanding of aspects of chemical reactions
Achievement criteria
The level of achievement that you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question. The key words are describe, explain, and discuss aspects of atomic structure and bonding.
On this page: Achievement | Achievement with Merit | Achievement with Excellence
Achievement
Demonstrate understanding of aspects of chemical reactions
This involves describing, identifying, naming, drawing, giving an account of and classifying chemical reactions.
The correct use of chemical vocabulary, names, symbols and formulae is required.
Word equations to represent the reactions are required.
Make sure you can:
- Identify the 4 different types of reactions from experimental observations and/or equations. These are decomposition precipitation/exchange reactions. combination reaction, precipitation reaction/exchange reactions.
Here are some guidelines: decomposition reactions have only one reactant and 2 or more products; combination reactions have 2 elements only as reactants (one is a metal and one a non-metal); precipitation reactions have 2 compounds as reactants and 2 compounds as products (one of the product compounds will be insoluble in water); displacement reactions have one metal and the compound of another metal as reactants and a different metal and different metal compound as products (the reactant metal will be above the product metal in the activity series).
- Use correct Chemistry words, symbols and formulae
- Write formulae for ionic compounds using an ion chart (provided- see lik below)
- Work out the solubility of a compound from solubility rules (provided – see here)
- Use an activity series of metals (provided-see link below)
- Write word equations for any reactions involved.
Achievement with merit
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of aspects of chemical reactions
Make sure you can:
- Meet the requirements for Achievement.
- Explain the classification of a chemical reaction based on experimental observations and/or equations.
- Complete symbol equations, using correct symbols and formulae (but these equations do not have to be balanced for Merit).
- Predict the formation of a precipitate using solubility rules (provided).
Achievement with excellence
Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of aspects of chemical reactions
This may involve linking aspects of chemical reactions when explaining, elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting or analysing the classification of reactions.
Make sure you can:
- Meet the requirements for Merit.
- Make links between the formation of precipitates and the solubility rules
- Make links between displacement reactions and the activity series
- Make links between the classification of the reactions, practical observations and equations
- Compare and contrast reactions of different types
- Write balanced symbol equations for reactions.
