Chemistry 2.1 Carry out qualitative analysis
Achievement criteria
The criteria for each level of achievement is based on the difficulty of writing equations for reactions involving precipitation and complex ion formation, and the ability of the student to identify unknown ions in solutions.
Achievement
- Carry out given procedures to determine ions present in solution.
- Apply solubility rules. This involves:
- the prediction of whether a precipitate forms, or
- the identification of any precipitate formed as a result of an experimental observation.
- Complete ionic equations for simple precipitation reactions.
- You may be required to distinguish between named pairs of anions or pairs of cations.
Achievement with Merit
- Carry out given procedures to determine ions present in solution.
- Determination of the ions must be supported by experimental observations and identification of precipitates formed.
- Write balanced ionic equations to describe the formation of precipitates.
Achievement with Excellence
- Carry out given procedures, involving the formation of complex ion(s), to determine ions present in solution, and justify the identification.
- Determination of the ions must be supported by experimental observations and identification of precipitates formed.
- Write balanced ionic equations to describe the formation of complex ions.
