Chemistry 2.1 Carry out quantitative analysis
Achievement criteria
The criteria for each level of achievement are based on the degree of accuracy in carrying out a titration and solving quantitative problems.
On this page: Achievement | Achievement with Merit | Achievement with Excellence
Achievement
Carry out quantitative analysis.
This involves collecting data from an acid-base titration and calculating the concentration of the unknown solution. You will also be required to solve other calculation problems where the data is provided.
Make sure you can:
- Carry out an acid-base titration.
- At least three recorded titre values must fall within a range of 0.4 mL and the average titre value must be within 0.8 mL of the expected outcome.
- Use titration data to calculate the concentration of a solution.
- Carry out one step calculations using n = m/M and c = n/V.
Achievement with Merit
Carry out in-depth quantitative analysis.
Make sure you can:
- Meet the criteria for achievement.
- At least three titre values must fall within a range of 0.4 mL and the average titre value must be within 0.5 mL of the expected outcome.
- Carry out two step calculations that require the application of n = m/M and c = n/V.
- Titrations calculations must be carried out correctly using only concordant titre values.
Achievement with Excellence
Carry out comprehensive quantitative analysis.
Make sure you can:
- Meet the requirements for merit.
- At least three titre values must fall within a range of 0.2 mL; the average titre value used is within 0.2 mL of the expected outcome.
- Solve quantitative problems that involve more than two steps, and the use of mole relationships in chemical equations.
- Answers to problems must have correct units and an appropriate number of significant figures.
