Chemistry 2.1 Carry out qualitative analysis

Key tips

  • Know your ions! These are the ions identified in the subject content page.
  • Remember that you will not be given a table of ions in your assessment.
  • Read the Chemistry 2.1 thread in the chemistry forum. It has lots of help on equations and you can download a revision sheet that summarises all reactions and equations.
  • If a precipitate does not form or does not dissolve with excess solution, DO NOT write an equation!
  • If a precipitate redissolves, you need to write an equation for the formation of a complex ion.
  • Use very small amounts of test solution in your test tube. If you use too much and then try to dissolve it, it may appear not to dissolve but you may have just run out of test tube room to add enough reagent.
  • Keep your glassware clean to avoid contamination.
  • Use white paper behind test tubes to help identify colours/presence of precipitate.
