Chemistry 2.4 Describe the nature of structure and bonding in different substances

Achievement criteria

The level of achievement that you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question. The key words are describe, link, and discuss aspects of chemistry.

Achievement

  • Describe the bonding in simple molecules and the nature of types of solids.
  • This involves identifying, naming, drawing, and giving characteristics of, or an account of aspects of, atomic structure and bonding.

    Make sure you can:

    • draw Lewis structures accounting for all electrons and atoms in the molecule
    • describe simple molecules as polar or non-polar
    • identify particles involved in different types of solids, forces between particles and their relative strength
    • identify a range of physical properties of ionic, covalent and metallic substances and attempt to relate these properties to their structures.

Achievement with Merit

  • Link selected properties of simple molecules and different types of solids to their structure.
  • This involves being able to identify a property of a substance and explain its relationship to the structure of the substance.

    Make sure you can:

    • meet the criteria for Achievement
    • draw Lewis structures and use them to determine the shape of the molecule
    • explain a relationship between the property of a substance and its structure
    • use specific chemistry vocabulary in appropriate settings.

Achievement with Excellence

  • Discuss properties of substances in terms of structure and bonding.
  • This involves showing understanding as to how or why something occurs by linking chemistry ideas/principles. It may involve students in justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, and analysing.

    Make sure you can:

    • meet the criteria for Merit
    • write clear and concise explanations linking properties of a substance and its structure – use full sentences not bullet points
    • draw appropriate diagrams to illustrate aspects of structure or property of a solid
    • relate molecular shape and polarity of bonds to polarity of molecule.
