Chemistry 2.4 Describe the nature of structure and bonding in different substances

Sites for revision

Bestchoice for chemistry
An interactive website, managed by Sheila Woodgate at the University of Auckland, which includes content and tutorials for courses in chemistry at university and at high school. Suitable for NCEA levels 2 and 3. Students need to register before accessing this site.

Chemguide – atomic structure and bonding menu
This part of the website is very useful for providing notes on structure and assisting you to make the links required between bonding and structure for Merit and Excellence. For information on electronegativity, bonding, polarity, go to bonding menu. It doesn’t, however, have enough information on Lewis structures.

Steve Marsden's chemistry resources for students and teachers
This website provides information about chemistry for students and teachers. To find a lot of material on atomic structure and bonding, choose the topics icon at the bottom right and then go to ‘The structure of molecules and the condensed states of matter’. There is information on all aspects of the achievement standard – some of it is more suitable for level 3 but, if you are unsure, use Bestchoice and Chemguide (the above links) to help you decide on the relevant material.

Virtual chembook – Solutions
This website has a lot of useful information on the solubility of different structures in polar and non-polar solvents. Use the menu at the top to find information on all the combinations that are examinable at level 2.

Lewis structures
This website is very useful for learning the rules of Lewis diagrams and providing questions and answers for practice. Suitable for NCEA level 2.

Virtual chembook – Lewis diagrams
This website is also useful for learning the rules of drawing Lewis diagrams and using the menu at the top of the page will allow exploration of the different shapes that are examinable at level 2.
