Chemistry 2.7 Describe oxidation–reduction reactions
Key tips
- Follow the symbols, nomenclature, spelling, and formatting of the current IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) convention as outlined in the reference sheet in the assessment specifications (PDF 268KB).
- Practical investigations and their observations are very important in this standard. Colours of species before and after the reaction need to be known.
- Make a chart for yourself as you progress in your study of all the species that are examinable (check the subject content page), their oxidation numbers and colours, what they change to and their oxidation numbers and colours. Then write out the half equation eg:
Cl2 is a green-yellow gas, oxidation number of 0
Cl- is colourless, oxidation number of -1
Cl2 + 2e- → 2Cl-. - If you can, demonstrate knowledge that you have gained from relevant practical work.
