Chemistry 3.1 Carry out an extended practical investigation involving quantitative analysis
Achievement criteria
The criteria for each level of achievement relates to the quality of design and analysis in individually carrying out an extended practical chemistry investigation involving quantitative analysis. You will be assessed on the quality of design in your approach to developing a procedure to collect data in relation to a possible trend in the amount of a substance, collecting and processing data, interpreting the results to reach a conclusion, and presenting a report.
Achievement
- Carry out an extended practical chemistry investigation involving quantitative analysis.
This involves developing and carrying out a procedure to collect data to investigate variations in the amount of a chemical substance. - collecting and recording a sufficient quantity of data to enable a conclusion to be drawn
- presenting a report that contains:
- a statement of the purpose (a possible trend must be considered with the purpose of the investigation, although the conclusion may be that there is no trend)
- a method which includes a description of collection and preparation of samples and solutions used, a description of how the experiment was carried out, including control of significant variables and detail of the analytical technique used
- results showing a summary of the collected and processed data
- a conclusion that links data to the purpose
- a log book providing ongoing detail of the investigation.
Achievement with Merit
- Carry out a quality extended practical chemistry investigation involving quantitative analysis.
This involves developing and carrying out a procedure to collect data to investigate variations in the amount of a chemical substance. - collecting and recording a sufficient quantity of data to enable a conclusion to be drawn
- accurate processing of the data as appropriate to the procedure used, to reach a valid conclusion (units need to be used appropriately and accurately)
- presenting a report that contains:
- a statement of the purpose and relevant background information
- a method which includes a description of collection and preparation of samples and solutions used, a description of how the experiment was carried out including control of significant variables and detail of the analytical technique used, which can be duplicated.
- results showing a summary of the collected and processed data
- a valid conclusion based on the processed data relevant to the purpose of the investigation
- a discussion that evaluates the procedure used or the reliability of the data.
Achievement with Excellence
- Carry out a high quality extended practical chemistry investigation involving quantitative analysis.
A high quality investigation is a quality investigation that also involves: - checks to determine the reliability of the procedure, ie method is adjusted where necessary to ensure an appropriate range of data values.
- accurate processing of data using appropriate significant figures
- presentation of a report in which:
- a description of the final procedure is provided that shows an understanding of the technique used and any justifications for any modifications to the procedure
- a valid conclusion needs to be reached or a discussion of why not is included
- there is a comprehensive evaluation of the whole investigation that considers the significance of the results in relation to background information and the validity of the conclusion, including an evaluation of the reliability of the data by evaluating the procedure used and sources of error.
For Excellence, a valid conclusion can only be reached by repeating experimental work. The experiment must be repeated for at least one new sample of the material involved to check whether the procedure was reliable.
