Chemistry 3.1 Carry out an extended practical investigation involving quantitative analysis
Subject content
Your teacher may provide you with instructions for an appropriate analytical technique that can be used in a school laboratory, or equivalent. The investigation will be based on an analytical technique such as:
- titration
- precipitation, or
- colorimetry.
You will also be guided by your teacher to the degree of complexity that is expected for this investigation. Pre-calibrated measuring equipment such as water test kits and dissolved oxygen meters should not be used.
Throughout the investigation, you will be expected to keep a log book that will record details of the development of the procedure you design and follow, any raw data that you collect, and any calculations that you make during the investigation.
If your aim is to gain more than an Achievement grade, make sure you have some understanding of errors in an investigation. Understand the concepts of sampling, bias, measurement errors, and sufficient data collected.
Check out the links page as it has two very good websites that help with investigation methods and problems that you encounter. There are also tutorials on such topics as measurement errors, writing reports, and frequently asked questions.
