Chemistry 3.5 Describe aspects of organic chemistry
Achievement criteria
The level of achievement that you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question about the structure, physical properties, and reactions of organic compounds. Understand what is expected of the words describe, explain and apply, and discuss.
Achievement
Describe aspects of organic compounds.
This involves identifying, naming, defining, drawing, giving features of and/or outlining.
Make sure you can:
- name and draw structures of organic compounds correctly.
- draw structural isomers and 3D structures of enantiomers
- recognise common reaction types, ie addition, elimination, condensation, substitution, oxidation-reduction
- identify appropriate tests to distinguish between organic compounds
- identify physical and chemical properties of organic substances.
Achievement with Merit
Explain and apply aspects of organic chemistry.
This involves describing as well as justifying, clarifying, giving reasons for, giving an account of and/or making links.
Make sure you can:
- link chemical observations to appropriate organic reactions
- demonstrate knowledge of appropriate reagents for organic reactions
- demonstrate knowledge of chemical and physical properties of common classes of organic compounds
- identify products of organic reactions
- fill in boxes of multistep organic reaction schemes.
Achievement with Excellence
Discuss aspects of organic chemistry.
This involves evaluating, reviewing, analysing, interpreting, relating, and/or comparing and contrasting.
Make sure you can:
- recognise different functional groups and apply knowledge gained from practical work
- recall prior knowledge of addition polymer concepts
- clearly understand reaction pathways and reagents for common organic compounds
- discuss hydrolysis of peptides and formation of condensation polymers.
