Terminology
Here are explanations for terminology used in the achievement criteria for this achievement standard. They are grouped by level of achievement.

Achievement
An idea may be thoughts, feelings, senses, and/or experiences.
Ideas form a central point to base your purpose and writing around.
Develop ideas means to build on an idea by adding detail, to form a cohesive piece of writing. You can do this by linking ideas and/or details into a complete and logical unit of writing.
Details may include description, specific information, or choice of words relating to a main idea.
Details help to support, develop and bring ideas to life.
Structure ideas means ordering and organising writing into an introduction, middle, and conclusion to suit the task, purpose and the reader.
Language features are the techniques and writing conventions that a writer uses to add meaning and interest to their work. This could include word choice and order, use of appropriate language for the text type and purpose. For example you could use language features such as: imagery, metaphor or simile to develop and back up an idea in creative writing.
Writing conventions are the rules used when writing such as: spelling, punctuation, grammar, word choice, order of words, sentences and paragraphing.
Without intrusive error patterns means that your writing should be free of significant and/or repeated error patterns such as sentence fragments, mixed tense sequences, mis-capitalisation and spelling.
Appropriate to audience and text type means the way it is written should match the type of writing required in the task and suit the reader.
Creative writing includes: poetry, description, narrative, dialogue, personal accounts and other appropriate creative writing text types.
Achievement with Merit
Convincingly means the way it is written makes the writing seem believable, real, or have an impact in some way. Ideas may be connected or linked between paragraphs through language, structure or thought.
Control means to carefully select words and language techniques for a specific reason.
Accurately means work has been closely and carefully proofread to a near-perfect standard with limited errors, so that only minor editing is required.
Achievement with Excellence
Effectively means clever, interesting, or offers a new way of looking at the topic to challenge the reader. The ideas and structure will follow a unique carefully thought through plan that draws the most important elements of the writing together.
Commands attention means the reader finds it very interesting, informative, worthwhile, or persuasive, they can’t put it down. This can be done by: having a unique writing style, skilled use of language, using of a wide range of language techniques, and varying sentence structures.
Writing conventions accurately
Accurately means work has been closely and carefully proofread to a near-perfect standard with limited errors, so that only minor editing is required.
