Dialogue (speech)
Dialogue is when characters speak to each other in a piece of writing. The interaction between characters creates a variety of sentences and sound effects, making your writing more interesting and alive. However, you must punctuate dialogue accurately and have a valid reason for including it in your writing. Depending on your writing you may use direct or indirect speech.
- Direct speech – when the exact words spoken are put in quotation marks.
- Indirect speech – quotation marks are not used because the meaning of the words spoken is more important than the exact words.
