1.7 Deliver a speech in a formal situation
Key tips
- Plan and write your speech with enough time to rehearse.
- Speak clearly and don't rush through your speech.
- Keep the audience's interests in mind when writing your speech, use language and examples they can relate to.
- Use a variety of language and delivery techniques.
- Cue cards should be for your reference only. Don't read from them and make sure they are in the correct order.
- Stand rather than sit when giving your speech, as sitting will restrict your movement and delivery.
- Control your breathing – breathe from the stomach not the throat.
- Build a relationship with the audience through natural and sustained eye contact.
- Start confidently and sound interested in your topic.
- Pay attention to how you will look to others or what might distract you, for example you may wish to tie your hair back.
