2.6 Read unfamiliar texts and analyse the ideas and language features
Achievement criteria
In this achievement standard you will read a range of written, visual, and oral texts that you have not studied before. You will answer a limited number of questions on each text type to test your ability to understand and analyse ideas, style and language used in the unfamiliar text.

Achievement
Read a range of unfamiliar texts and analyse the ideas and language features.
Make sure you:
- read text fully to get an overall impression of ideas, tone, and language before answering the question
- know important language terminology and definitions
- know that a visual feature is something you can look at such as layout or style of font
- know that a verbal feature is something you can read such as language features and written content
- specifically and correctly name features of content, style, and language techniques (rather than writing 'it' name the feature)
- quote and/or identify relevant evidence from the text accurately
- are able to explain the text in your own words and go beyond restating the meaning by analysing the language feature
- use keywords to structure your answers and answer all parts of the question
- give a straightforward explanation and begin to show an understanding of purpose and audience
- have a systematic approach to answering questions
- have at least six pieces of evidence meeting the achieved criterion.
Achievement with Merit
Read a range of unfamiliar texts, analyse the ideas and language features, and discuss the effects.
Make sure you:
- reach Achievement
- answer all parts of the question in detail
- show an understanding of figurative, emotive/connotative, or less obvious language features
- clearly explain how and why the identified features of content, style, and language features work to present a message to a target audience
- understand and explain how the purpose of the text (persuade, entertain, instruct, or inform) is supported by the features used
- analyse ideas and language features by giving a detailed explanation of the effect in relation to the purpose of the text
- have at least two pieces of evidence meeting the achieved criterion plus four meeting merit criterion.
Achievement with Excellence
Read a range of unfamiliar texts, convincingly analyse the ideas and language features, and discuss the effects.
Make sure you:
- reach Achievement with Merit
- show an appreciation of the overall purpose, ideas, style, tone, and audience of the text in all answers
- use terminology confidently to discuss language features in the text
- use specific detail from the text to discuss complex ideas, advanced vocabulary, and the less obvious workings of language
- evaluate and give clear reasons explaining how well the identified features of the text work
- explain in detail links between features, audience, and purpose
- make significant connections between the features of content, style, and language
- make mature observations and respond personally to the text
- make conclusions about how the language has been used to fulfil the purpose and reach the intended audience
- write a clear, accurate, and detailed response to the question to show a full and deep understanding of the text
- have at least two pieces of evidence meeting the achieved criterion plus four meeting excellence criterion.
