3.1 Produce an extended piece of writing in a selected style
Crafting
Crafting is the process of standing back from your writing and methodically reworking your ideas, structure, and style until you are satisfied it is your best work. Overall two important things to look at are unity and coherence.
Word choice
Evaluate the effectiveness of each word or combinations of words to eliminate wordiness. Remove boring, confusing, or unnecessary words and add more precise and interesting words such as concrete nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Make sure the verb tense is consistent.
Sentences
Rework sentences to get clarity, variety, and emphasis of words and ideas where needed.
Use parallel structure to create balance and to effectively communicate ideas.

- Can you use a greater variety of sentences, words, and appropriate language techniques?
- Can the pace of writing be changed to emphasise different points?
- Have you eliminated unnecessary words that confuse or detract from the main idea?
- How can you improve unity and cohesion of ideas, structure, and style?
- Are your images or allusions appropriately developed throughout?
This checklist of writing concerns, Higher Order Concerns (HOCs) and Lower Order Concerns (LOCs), is helpful. Treat all questions with equal importance for this type of assessment.
