3.1 Produce an extended piece of writing in a selected style
Review writing
The purpose of a review is to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of a film or book so the viewer or reader can make an informed opinion on the overall merits of the film or book. It is important to view and/or read a range of substantial reviews to become familiar with this style of writing. When you write your review, you may not include material from existing film reviews. You should avoid reading reviews of the film or book you will write about for this reason. See the questions in writing process to help you model your writing.
- Read the Annotated example of paragraph from a film review (Word 25KB).
- Use The Language of Film and Video to identify and evaluate effectiveness of techniques, research other films, and balance positive aspects with criticism as appropriate.
- See how to write to explain, review or comment
- For examples see New Zealand Listener and click on Arts, Music & Books heading.
