3.1 Produce an extended piece of writing in a selected style
Structure
Organise ideas into a logical order
The structure for any piece of writing may:
- begin with a 'hook' – such as a quotation, dialogue, allusion, character action, question, anecdote, or opinion to introduce the topic or theme
- focus on and develop 5–6 key points
- develop a detailed explanation/description for each point
- conclude by using techniques such as dialogue, imagery, or opinion to reinforce the main idea or theme.
Paragraphs
It is important to create links between paragraphs so ideas flow in a logical order and the reader can be guided on to your next point without becoming confused.
See Transitional Devices (Connecting Words) for helpful advice on selecting the right words to start paragraphs and sentences.
