3.2 Respond critically to written text(s) studied

This achievement standard involves a previous reading and study of written text(s), and developing a critical response, using supporting evidence.

Assessment will require writing a critical response/essay on an aspect or aspects of one of the following text types:

  • novel
  • short story – refer to at least two
  • poetry – refer to at least two
  • non-fiction
  • non-Shakespearean drama
  • print media - refer to at least two
  • hyperfiction.

Text(s) analysed at this level should be of sufficient depth and complexity to enable development of a full and detailed analysis. Text(s) studied are also expected to have significant literary merit/ worth/ qualities, or an established critical reputation or acclaim.
