3.5 Read and respond critically to unfamiliar prose and poetry texts
Key tips
- Read the question carefully, follow all instructions and answer all parts of the question.
- Read the whole text before answering the questions.
- Read each text more than once.
- Work in a logical order so you don't leave gaps.
- Attempt to answer all of the questions.
- Use appropriate language terminology and analyse how and why the technique has been used.
- Use specific and accurate examples from the text.
- If you have made a mistake, write clearly where you have written your answer in the back of your answer booklet – arrows can be confusing.
- Use standard English in your answers no colloquial or text language.
- Check for missed questions and confusing answers.
- Keep an eye on the time so you can answer all the questions.
- Texts used in examinations are typically New Zealand based so a wide reading of contemporary New Zealand texts could be a good idea.
