3.6 Construct and deliver an oral presentation

Achievement criteria

The level of achievement that you receive is decided by the quality of ideas, information and/or opinions, the delivery and integration of oral, visual and other presentation techniques suitable for the audience and the purpose of your presentation. Each one of these parts is of equal importance.

Achievement

Make sure you:

  • have at least one central idea or theme supported by appropriate detail
  • structure your presentation into a logical sequence with an introduction, middle, and conclusion
  • use and emphasise language techniques to help make your meaning clear
  • use appropriate gestures to support your words
  • include the audience by using techniques such as personal pronouns
  • use other presentation techniques to support your ideas such as a PowerPoint presentation, a class or group activity, or questions
  • make regular eye contact with the audience
  • use your notes correctly by only looking at them occasionally
  • stand steady when speaking so you don't rock or sway
  • speak clearly at a reasonable volume without mumbling
  • speak at a reasonable pace
  • try to speak for between 5–10 minutes.

Achievement with Merit

  • Construct and deliver a presentation that communicates effectively with an audience.
  • Develop and support detailed idea(s).
  • Combine a range of appropriate presentation techniques for a specific audience and purpose.

Make sure you:

  • reach Achievement
  • spend time working on your ideas considering all angles and possibilities
  • have valid reasons as to why you are presenting these ideas
  • have an interesting introduction and conclusion that the audience can relate to
  • link ideas and details for a smooth structure
  • use a variety of sentence structures to help emphasise your main points
  • use and combine a range of oral, visual, and other presentation techniques
  • know your presentation thoroughly
  • look at the audience for most of your presentation so your begin to interact with the audience.

Achievement with Excellence

Make sure you:

  • reach Achievement with Merit
  • present original ideas and/or a unique perspective or interpretation
  • have a full and in depth understanding the important issues of your topic
  • make it interesting and/or challenging for the audience
  • structure material in an unique way, possibly by connecting the introduction and conclusion so that your presentation is memorable
  • use a range of sentence structures for deliberate effect in your presentation
  • speak confidently integrating a variety of language and delivery techniques throughout your presentation
  • have well-rehearsed gestures and voice techniques integrated into your presentation
  • combine and integrate complex ideas, language, and structure successfully in your presentation
  • know your presentation thoroughly so you can build a rapport with the audience.
