Calculus 3.5 Sketch graphs of conic sections and write equations related to conic sections
Key tips
- Revise level 2 coordinate geometry.
- Know which formulae will be provided.
- Practise sketching graphs of circles, ellipse, hyperbolae, and parabolas given the equation and be able to identify the key features on these.
- The shape of the conic section must be correct and its features accurately presented in a sketch. A plot is not required.
- The use of appropriate technology is expected. However, graphs must be transferred correctly to the answer booklet.
- Be able to find equations for graphs of each of these.
- Clearly label key features such as intercepts, asymptotes, centre, radius, vertex, axis of symmetry.
- Set solutions out logically, using correct mathematical statements.
- Show intermediate steps in your solutions. If you give the correct answer only, you may lose the opportunity to provide evidence for other grades or to have minor errors ignored.
- Problems for Achievement with Excellence may require the use of a variety of techniques related to conic sections and differentiation.
