CAS Mathematics 2.3 Demonstrate an understanding of processes involving trigonometry and coordinates
Key tips
- You will be expected to relate your solutions to the context and appropriate rounding and units is required.
- You may use coordinate geometry or trigonometric techniques or a combination of these to solve problems.
- For Achievement with Excellence, you will be required to show a chain of reasoning. You need to use correct mathematical statements and present work in a logical manner.
- Computer Algebraic Systems (CAS) technology may be used.
- Practise using the sine and cosine rules for finding sides and angles.
- Draw a diagram of the triangle you have identified. Add your measurements and the side or angle you require. If the triangle is not right-angled, you will have four labels. Use the cosine rule if you have three sides and one angle. Use the sine rule if you have two sides and two angles.
- Use trigonometric ratios sin, cos, and tan for finding unknown angles and sides in right-angled triangles.
- Attempt all questions, since evidence from higher level questions can be used towards gaining Achievement.
- Check that your calculator is in the correct mode (degrees or radians) for each question.
- Give your answers within the domain that is given in the question. This will tell you if your answers should be in degrees or radians. You will not be given credit if your answer is in radians and the question requires degrees.
- There is usually more than one solution for a trigonometric equation. All solutions within the given domain are required to gain credit for a problem.
- Show all working as credit may be given for a minor slip, if the assessor can see what you have done.
- Do not round until the end of the problem.
