CAS Calculus 3.3 Demonstrate an understanding of patterns and relationships when solving problems
Key tips
- Know the formulae given in the formula resource.
- Practise sketching graphs of circles, ellipse, hyperbolae, and parabolas given the equation and be able to identify and clearly label key features such as intercepts, asymptotes, centre, radius, vertex, axis of symmetry.
- The use of technology is expected. However, graphs must be transferred correctly to the answer booklet.
- Be able to find equations for graphs.
- Set solutions out logically, using correct mathematical statements. If you give the correct answer only, you may lose the opportunity to provide evidence for other grades or to have minor errors ignored.
- Attempt all questions as questions will have multiple parts and the question as a whole will provide opportunity for all grades of performance – Achievement, Achievement with Merit, and Achievement with Excellence.
- Check that your answer is sensible, you have answered the question asked, and it is related to the context given.
- For Achievement with Excellence, you may be required to devise your own model, and to interpret and evaluate your solution by linking different representations of concepts or generalisation.
- Check out I Can Do Sheet Level 3 Calculus from www.nzamt.org.nz for a list of essential skills for each achievement standard.
