Mathematics 2.1 Manipulate algebraic expressions and solve equations
Solving a polynomial equation in factorised form
To solve a polynomial equation that is already written in factorised form,
e.g. 3x2(x – 7)(2x + 5) = 0
write each factor equal to 0 and solve each for x
3x2 = 0 x – 7 = 0 2x + 5 = 0
x2 = 0 x = 7 2x = –5
x = 0 x = –2.5
Solutions are x = 0, 7, –2.5
