Mathematics 2.2 Draw straightforward non-linear graphs
Cubics - factorised polynomials
For a cubic or polynomial graph, the acceptable features include:
- x intercepts
- y intercept
Polynomials will be given in factored form
e.g. y = (x + 1)(x – 2)(x - 3).
To graph this function, find the intercepts on the axes:
- To find the y-intercept, put x = 0 into the equation and work out the y-coordinate.
- To find the x-coordinates, put y = 0 in the equation, write each factor equal to 0 and solve equation.
Draw a smooth curve through the points.
