Mathematics 2.7 Solve straightforward problems involving arithmetic and geometric sequences

Key tips

  • List the first few terms of the sequence to ensure that you use the correct approach.
  • Read the questions carefully and solve the problems in context.
  • Check the reasonableness of your answer in the context of the question.
  • Attempt all questions, as evidence from higher-level questions may be used as replacement evidence when awarding achievement.
  • Look for key words. APs are indicated by extra, less, shorter, longer, etc. GPs are indicated by times, percentage increase, ratio, etc.
  • Use brackets to ensure the correct order of operations.
  • To gain achievement with excellence, you may be expected to solve quadratic equations. This could involve use of the quadratic formula.
