Mathematics 2.9 Solve straightforward trigonometric equations
Key tips
- Attempt all questions, since evidence from higher level questions can be used towards gaining Achievement.
- Check that your calculator is in the correct mode (degrees or radians) for each question.
- If you are working in degrees, remember to put the degree symbol with each solution.
- Give your answers within the domain that is given in the question. This will tell you if your answers should be in degrees or radians. You will not be given credit if your answer is in radians and the question requires degrees.
- There is usually more than one solution for a trigonometric equation. All solutions within the given domain are required to gain credit for a problem.
- Set solutions out logically, using correct mathematical statements.
- Show all working as credit may be given for a minor slip, if the assessor can see what you have done.
- Do not round until the end of the problem.
- Sketch graphs to help you interpret the question.
- For Achievement with Merit, you may be required to solve equations involving squares of trigonometric functions, eg sin2x = 0.25.
