Statistics and modelling 3.1 Determine the trend for time series data
Key tips
- Reports are best written by doing your graphs and tables in a spreadsheet and then copying and pasting into a word document.
- Language skills are important when writing reports. Correct grammatical sentences and accurate vocabulary will help your assessor give you the results you want.
- Data may be supplied or you may be expected to gather your own.
- Suitable time series have a distinct seasonal cycle or a long-term trend which is masked by the variability of the data.
- Check if your school has PC/INFOS Schools, a database supplied to schools by Statistics New Zealand. It may be available in the school library, the mathematics department, or the economics department.
- The Statistics New Zealand website has a large amount of data.
- Data collected by Statistics New Zealand is published monthly in Key Statistics which you could find at your local library.
- Use of appropriate technology is expected. You need to show that you understand the formulae you use in your calculations so that the teacher is able to replicate your analysis and forecasting.
- Analysis may involve data that is represented by an index series. An indexed series can be used to compare different time series over a period of time.
- Check out the I Can Do Sheet Level 3 Statistics from www.nzamt.org.nz for a list of essential skills for each achievement standard.
