Science 1.15 Demonstrate understanding of the effects of astronomical cycles on planet Earth

Key tips

  • Sometimes a question may involve more than one object, for example sun, moon, and corona. In your answer try to avoid the word 'it'. Always clearly state the name of the object you are writing about.
  • Remember that the distances in space are huge! The methods of observations in astronomy include telescopes, satellites, binoculars, and spacecraft (but NOT microscopes, stethoscopes, or periscopes).
  • Astronomy is a very broad topic. The links provided in this standard may provide some information about your even, but you need to do some exploring and reading rather than just listing facts such as sizes of planets and names of moons etc. It is common for recent astronomical events to be examined (in the last 3–5 years) so keep an eye out for such events or ask your teacher what has happened recently, for example, Pluto is no longer a planet.

Your report should include:

  • an introduction that summarises the effects of astronomical cycles on planet Earth
  • a paragraph that states the question or purpose you have investigated
  • the relevant information, in your own words, that you have selected, processed
  • an evaluation of your investigation. In your evaluation, consider the quality of the sources of information that you used.
