Science 1.4 Describe aspects of chemistry
Achievement criteria
The type of achievement you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question. The key words are describe, explain, and apply aspects of chemistry. From your answers the assessor will assess your understanding of the topics of the achievement standard.
Achievement
Describe aspects of chemistry related to atomic structure, reactions of metals, and reactions of acids and bases.
This involves recognising, naming, drawing, giving characteristics of or an account of. It also includes completing word equations.
Make sure you can:
- draw atoms with appropriate numbers of protons or electrons
- compare atoms and ions with respect to electron numbers
- distinguish a physical or chemical property of a metal or acid
- identify useful or relevant properties of a metal
- identify colours of indicator in acid or base
- read and write ionic formulae
- interpret data from a table
- describe observations of common reactions of metals, acids, and bases.
Achievement with Merit
Explain aspects of chemistry related to atomic structure, reactions of metals, and reactions of acids and bases.
This involves being able to provide a reason for how or why something occurs. It also includes writing word equations or completing given symbol equations.
Make sure you can:
- meet the criteria for Achievement
- link metal structure to a physical property
- explain, using chemical terminology, what a neutralisation reaction is
- explain observations of common reactions of metals, acids, and bases
- explain electron arrangements of atoms and ions
- write full word equations and complete given symbol equations
- explain how to identify between different chemical compounds.
Achievement with Excellence
Discuss aspects of chemistry related to atomic structure, reactions of metals, and reactions of acids and bases.
This involves showing understanding as to how or why something occurs by linking the ideas and principles in chemistry. It may involve students in justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, and analysing. It also includes writing a balanced symbol equation.
Make sure you can:
- meet the criteria for Merit
- write balanced chemical equations
- use chemical terminology to express ideas
- discuss fully the effect of adding indicator to a solution
- discuss atomic structure, including electron arrangements of atoms and ions
- compare and contrast properties of metals and their reactions
- discuss all aspects of a reaction of a metal, acid, or base.
