Science 1.6 Investigate the implications of the use of carbon compounds as fuels

Achievement criteria

The type of achievement you will reach is decided by the way you answer each question.  From your answers the assessor will assess your understanding of the topics of the achievement standard.

On this page: Achievement | Achievement with Merit | Achievement with Excellence

Achievement

Investigate the implications of the use of carbon compounds as fuels. This involves making and recording observations, processing, interpreting, identifying, classifying and describing selected properties of carbon compounds and the implications of their use as fuels.  The implications of using carbon compounds as fuels can be collected from a variety of sources such as direct observations, collection of experimental data, resources sheets, photos, videos, websites and reference books.

Make sure you can:

  • Describes the properties of the alkanes and alcohols including melting point, boiling point and combustion reactions.
  • Record observations of complete and incomplete combustion.
  • Describe the use of carbon compounds as fuels.
  • Describe the implications of the use of carbon compounds as fuels.  These are the effects of their use and combustion on humans and/or the environment, and could include the efficiency of fuels, air or thermal pollution, effect on global climate, ocean acidification, use of non-renewable resources and/or food crops for fuel.
  • Systematically name (using IUPAC conventions) and draw structural formulae for straight-chain alkanes (up to 8 carbons) and methanol and ethanol.
  • Write word equations for combustion reactions.

Achievement with merit

Investigate in depth the implications of the use of carbon compounds as fuels.
This involves making links between selected properties of carbon compounds, their use as fuels and the implications of their use as fuels.

Make sure you can:

  • Meet the requirements for Achievement.
  • Compare different carbons compounds in terms of their physical properties and combustion reactions, their use as fuels and implications of their use.
  • Write balanced symbol equations for combustion reactions.

Achievement with excellence

Investigate comprehensively the implications of the use of carbon compounds as fuels. This involves elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting, or analysing the links between the properties of the different carbon compounds, their uses as fuels and the implications of the use of different carbon compounds as fuels.

Make sure you can:

  • Meet the requirements for Merit.
  • Analyse and make multiple links between the physical and chemical properties of different carbon compounds, their use as fuels and implications of their uses.
  • Write balanced symbol equations for combustion reactions.
