Science 1.6 Investigate the implications of the use of carbon compounds as fuels
Subject content
Make sure you have up-to-date course notes and don’t forget to use them. If you haven’t got them, see your teacher. These are the topics you need to revise before doing this assessment:
Draw structural formulae for straight-chain alkanes, with 1-8 carbon atoms and name them.
Describe the trends in melting points and boiling points.
- Alcohols
Draw structural formulae for methanol and ethanol.
Compare the melting points and boiling points of methanol and ethanol.
- Combustion reactions
Identify the reactants and products for the complete and incomplete combustion of alkanes and methanol/ ethanol, and describe what would be observed. Write word and balanced symbol equations for complete and incomplete combustion reactions.
Link the combustion reactions of alkanes and methanol/ ethanol to their use as fuels.
- Implications of use as fuels on humans and the environment. These could include:
Efficiency of fuels in terms of energy production.
Air pollution that results from the use of carbon compounds as fuels.
Causes and effects of the greenhouse effect, global warming and ocean acidification.
Use of non-renewable resources such as petrol and coal for fuels.
Use of food crops for fuels eg: biofuels.
