Science 1.7 Investigate the implications of the properties of metals for their use in society
Achievement criteria
You will need to process data from a variety of sources, which will involve your own practical observations and could also involve reference material such as resource sheets, videos, websites and text books.
The grade you will reach is decided by the quality of your observations and other data and the way you answer each question. From your work the assessor will grade your understanding of the topics in this achievement standard.

Achievement
Investigate the implications of the properties of metals for their use in society.
This involves making and recording practical observations of the physical and chemical properties of metals, describing, gathering, processing, interpreting, identifying, classifying and giving an account of the properties of metals and the implications for their uses in society.
It requires the correct use of chemical vocabulary, names, symbols and formulae and the writing of word equations for relevant reactions.
Make sure you:
- Observe carefully and accurately
- Use all the metals provided
- Complete the table your teacher has provided for your observations
- Describe the physical properties (melting point, colour, lustre, hardness, ductility and malleability, electrical and thermal conductivity, density
- Describe the chemical properties of the metals provided (reaction with oxygen, water and acids (HCl and H2SO4)
- Use correct Chemistry words, symbols and formulae
- Describe the uses in society of the metals provided
- Relate the uses of the metals to the activity series (studied in classes)
- Write word equations for any reactions involved.
Achievement with merit
Investigate, in depth, the implications of the properties of metals for their use
in society.
Make sure you:
- Meet the requirements for Achievement.
- Link the properties of each metal to its uses
- Complete symbol equations, using correct symbols and formulae (but these equations do not have to be balanced for Merit)
Achievement with excellence
Investigate, comprehensively, the implications of the properties of metals for their use in society.
This may involve explaining, elaborating, justifying, relating, evaluating, comparing and contrasting or analysing the links between the physical and chemical properties of metals and the implications for their use in society
Make sure you:
- Meet the requirements for Merit.
- Explain in detail how the properties of each metal influence its uses
- Compare and contrast the properties (and the implications for their use) of the different metals
- Write balanced symbol equations for reactions
